Two Ways Healthy Eating Saves Money


I've just returned from the National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences and had a wonderful time exchanging ideas with other Extension educators from around the country! Many of the people at the conference teach nutrition and wellness, even though I don't, and one of the things I brought back from the conference was a renewed commitment to eat in a more healthy manner. Not only do I believe that I will feel better if I eat better, but I honestly believe that it will help my finances too.

Now you might think I'm stretching the idea just so that I can write this blog post, but stay with me for a bit! First, I'm at the point in my life where I don't need to be cooking to please young children. Rather, I need to focus on low-fat, whole grain, vegetable-intense meals that are well-suited for mid-age-plus adults whose weight tends to keep edging up. These types of food products are often cheaper than convenience foods. In addition, rather than splurging on calories and dollars by going out to eat for dinner, I need to slow my life down enough so that I have time to cook healthy meals to eat at home. There's no doubt in my mind that eating at home is cheaper than eating at restaurants. This is the first way I save money.

If I look down the road, the second way I save money is by saving on future medical bills. Gaining weight, a few pounds a year, is only going to lead to obesity by the time I'm old(er). This is not rocket science; the numbers are easy to add up. And, it seems to me that obesity leads to health problems. If I want to enjoy my retirement, I need to take action now to save on future dollars that might otherwise be spent on medical care.

But it takes continued motivation to eat healthy. Luckily we have two wonderful sources from University of Illinois Extension educators to help stay motivated. Two colleagues of mine write blogs that have up-to-date nutrition information and creative, healthy recipes. I plan to read their blogs regularly and I invite you to do so too:
