Keep Online/Mobile Shopping Secure

We'll shop 'til we drop -- and then go home to shop online! According to a recent study by McAfee, 70% of those surveyed plan to shop online this holiday season AND a surprising 1 in 4 (24%) of them plan to use their mobile devices.

When you shop online, take care to keep your payments secure:
  • Be sure that the website is secure before entering your credit card information. The website url should be "https" to show that it is secure. The "s" stands for "secure" and indicates that the communication with the webpage is encrypted.
  • Pay by credit card rather than debit card. Credit card transactions are protected by the Fair Credit Billing Act; if a problem occurs, you are only liable for the first $50 in unauthorized charges. With a debit card, you do not have this protection and you could lose all money in your account.

Do you use your cell phone or tablet to make purchases? Here are some tips to consider:

  • Update your apps – many of the updates that become available relate to security.
  • When you download a new app, pay attention to the permissions that are requested and make sure those permissions make sense. For example, does the app require knowing where you are or access to your contacts? If so, does it make sense for the function of the app?
  • Get Savvy about Wi-Fi Hotspots: Don't share personal or financial information over an unsecured network (a connection that doesn't require a password for access). Using the direct web access on your phone (via a 3G/4G connection) is safer than an unsecured wireless network when on your mobile device.

And, my personal tip:  slow down and breathe. Don't click too fast. Think about what type of link you're clicking on and remember, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is!

Shop safely and enjoy the holidays!
