Extension Seeks Public Input into Local Foods Education Initiative
July 27, 2016
University of Illinois Extension Unit 18 is seeking individuals interested in offering their input to help develop a local foods education initiative. The overall goal of the project is to make the public more aware of local food options, providers, and how to create nutritious meals using produce grown and readily available in central Illinois. This initiative is also aimed to help local producers become better connected to local markets. Extension is excited to discuss possible educational programing related to the initiative such as: cottage law classes, food preservation, marketing classes for producers, horticulture classes, symposium focused on local foods and putting small acres to work, and other topics the public may be interested in.
Lisa Peterson, Nutrition and Wellness Educator, says, “Extension would like to offer a local foods initiative throughout Unit 18, and we are looking for input from local producers and residents who share a similar interest.” She adds that, “We are hosting informal interest meetings in each of the four counties Unit 18 serves in order to gather ideas from the community about how to best accomplish the goal of promoting local foods, as well as educate the public on the value of eating fresh produce, and healthy methods for preparation.”
The public is invited to sit at the table and discuss programming they would like to see, ideas for connecting local producers to the public, improving awareness of local foods, and additional ideas.
The interest meetings are open to anyone who'd like to share their thoughts or ideas about local foods in Christian, Jersey, Macoupin, and Montgomery Counties. In order to prepare proper accommodations, interested parties are asked to pre-register, if possible, by calling their local Extension office or on-line at: https://web.extension.illinois.edu/registration/?RegistrationID=14956
