HCE Members Learned about Drug Addiction & Technology at Fall Retreat
October 19, 2016
University of Illinois Extension hosted an all-day fall retreat of the Home and Community Education Association (HCE) on October 13. Thirty people attended and were from Christian, Fayette, Jersey, Macoupin, and Montgomery counties. The retreat took place at the Montgomery County Extension office in Hillsboro. HCE/HCEA members gathered to hear speakers and share in social activities.
The retreat began at 10 AM with a welcome by Lisa Peterson, Nutrition & Wellness Educator for University of Illinois Extension Unit 18. The morning speaker was Montgomery County Undersheriff, Rick Robbins who discussed drug abuse and addiction trends, and steps citizen could take to protect themselves and others. The afternoon session was “Technology for seniors” presented by Terri Miller, Publicist for the University of Illinois Extension. Miller compared and contrasted various mobile technologies, discussed social media, and offer tips for internet safety.
HCE members also created a “Thanksgiving Tree”, by writing down what they were thankful for on paper leaves. Each one was then added to a large poster so that other members could read the comments and share.
Lunch was provided by the Macoupin County HCE chapter. Preparations are underway to organize and plan a spring HCE retreat. Anyone interested in learning more about upcoming HCE programs is encouraged to contact their local Extension office or visit: http://web.extension.illinois.edu/cjmm/.
