Christian County Master Gardeners to host spring plant sale May 6

Get your yard ready for summer by attending University of Illinois Christian County Master Gardener’s Spring Plant Sale on Saturday, May 6, 2017, at the U of I Extension Office, 1120 N. Webster St., in Taylorville from 10 a.m. until all plants are sold, rain or shine.

This year, Master Gardeners will offer a large variety of perennials for sun and shade, small trees and shrubs, as well as native plants (some from U of I Extension office rain garden). All plants are grown in the area, are naturally adapted to local environmental conditions, and will be sold well below retail prices. Purchases can be made by cash or check only.

This is the fourth annual plant sale conducted by the Master Gardeners with each being a huge success. Most shoppers who attend are able to fill their yards with a variety of perennial plants and shrubs all grown by experienced gardeners. (Perennials are plants that come back year after year.  Annuals must be planted every year.) Funds raised from the plant sale help provide horticultural education programs for the community.

Master Gardeners thoroughly enjoy giving help and advice, and will be present to share their knowledge of each plant’s growth habits, bloom color, season, size, light and moisture requirements, as well as identify which plants attract hummingbirds, butterflies and more. They will also be available to help carry your purchases to your car.

The plant sale is held in conjunction with the Christian County Home and Community Education Association (HCEA) Table Setting Luncheon. Lunch will be available to eat in or carry out from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. HCEA will be selling hanging baskets and annual bedding plants for gardens and containers to complement the perennials sold by the Master Gardeners.

Customers are encouraged to come early for the best selection. Enhance the quality of your environment to benefit your health and spirit. Anyone interested in more information can contact the Christian County Extension office at 217-287-7246.
