YMCA Day Campers Discover Locally Grown Produce

TAYLORVILLE, Ill. - This summer, University of Illinois Extension Unit 18 in cooperation with the Eat Local Initiative hosted a two-month program at the Christian County YMCA in Taylorville. The camp was free to YMCA Day Camp participants. The kids used the "Got Veggies Curriculum" every Wednesday from June until the last week in July. The hour sessions involved taste testing local foods, learning about what foods grow in Illinois, touring local growers in the area, and growing their own food in small bag gardens at the YMCA. During the last session, the kids planted fall produce in their bag gardens to take home, received cooking aprons, and made a farmers market and watermelon salsa to taste.

The Eat Local Initiative was developed to make the public more aware of local food providers available in central Illinois. Also, how to create nutritious meals using local produce, connecting producers to local markets, and the Christian, Jersey, Macoupin, and Montgomery county residence continue to support each other in making positive lifestyle choices. The program was available thanks to the generous donation from the Lumpkin Family Foundation.
