A Field Crop Scouting Workshop was offered on Monday, July 23 at the Dave Griffel farm north of Gillespie.

Robert Bellm, University of Illinois Extension Educator shared information on different insects for the rest of the summer. Also, Illinois is seeing higher use of foliar fungicides on hybrid corn in the 2007 growing season than in any of the previous seasons added together. Three factors seem to be driving this potential increase in fungicide use: market price of corn; increased corn-on-corn acreage, which increases foliar disease risk; and marketing of fungicide products.

Bellm also reviewed steps in scouting for soybean rust. Efforts have been extended these past three years to drive home the point that scouting soybeans is going to be essential to manage soybean rust.
