Sexual Abuse Prevention Resources

Posted by Tammi A. Tannura -

Back on July 23 and August 19, 2013, I posted blogs about child sexual abuse awareness and prevention. Just recently, I was introduced to new, very relevant resources that address talking to children about child sexual abuse.

Toward the Stars is a website focused on empowering girls, but the sexual abuse prevention resources in the link below are applicable to girls AND boys. While estimates vary due to underreporting, approximately 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 20 boys is a victim of child sexual abuse.1

The resources provided are story books about sexual abuse with titles that include Some Secrets Should Never Be Kept, I Said NO! A Kids Guide to Keeping Private Parts Private, My Body Belongs to Me and Please Tell!: A Child's Story about Sexual Abuse. Target age groups for these books range from age 3 to age 12. One book, Tornado Warning, is about teen dating violence and would be suitable for an older target audience.

If you happen to use one of these books (or a few) with your child, I would be interested to hear how it went. You can share your comments by leaving a comment on the blog's web page. You will see "Leave a Comment" at the end of the blog.
