Community Youth Development Institute High School Garden

Posted by Ron Wolford -

Abigail and I helped out with the Community Youth Development Institute (CYDI) High School Garden. The garden has about 85 raised beds, a chicken coop, and a pond. They were having a big volunteer day where the students and people in the community could come and help in the garden. There were multiple stations set up for volunteers, which included weeding, cleaning the chicken coop, building raised beds, planting, and decorating blocks of wood to go around the garden. There was a big BBQ for lunch, and the food was fantastic.

While we were there, we had the opportunity to help pre-schoolers from the community plant herbs in a few of the raised bed. We were excited to see the enthusiasm the children had for gardening. We also had the opportunity to plant many fruits and vegetables as well. The coordinator was extremely excited to be planting kale because she introduced the students to kale chips, and they have fallen in love with the snack. Overall, we enjoyed our time at this garden and hoped that we can visit again.
