News Release

Cache Me If You Can with 4-H Geocache Club

Geocaching is the world’s largest treasure hunt where participants search for millions of hidden caches using GPS technology available at their fingertips. Youth are invited to join Macon County 4-H for its Cache Me If You Can club this spring to learn about, find and create geocaches.

The club will meet 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays from March 29 to April 19. Meetings will start at the University of Illinois Macon County Extension Office, 3351 N. President Howard Brown Blvd. in Decatur. The club’s final session will be on April 22 for Earth Day. Youth ages 8 to 18 will learn the basics of geocaching, explore new areas as they search for geocaches as a team and build their own geocache. Club members will also receive a 4-H travelbug, a trackable device that they can name, register and follow online as other geocachers move it to new locations. On Earth Day, local geocachers will be invited to join club members when they trade travel bugs and hide their own cache.

Register for Cache Me If You Can by March 27 online at or by calling the Macon County Extension office at 217.877.6042. There is a small fee to cover program costs – $15 for current 4-H members or $20 for non-members. Make sure to bring a smart phone or tablet, although members can participate without one too, and a pair of comfortable walking shoes. For more information, contact 4-H Program Coordinator Becky Hugo at or 217.877.6042.
