University of Illinois Extension’s Candice Hart Hosting Hands-on Horticulture Series in Macon County.

Kick the winter blues with Extension Horticulture Educator Candice Hart with her how-to gardening series: Hands-on Horticulture with Hart. The first session in the series is Hydroponics for Home Food Production is March 6. Hydroponics, a method of growing plants in water instead of soil, is quickly becoming an indoor technique for growing lettuce, herbs and more. Participants will learn the basics of hydroponics and build a 3-gallon system to take home. Cost for this program is $25 and includes all materials.

The series continues on March 21 with Seed Starting: Get Started Off Right. Hart will help you get a jump-start on your garden this year by discussing how to choose seed varieties, proper seeding tips and how to care for newly started transplants. Participants will have an opportunity to start a flat of their own seeds to take home. Cost for this program is $15 and includes all supplies. Participants are encouraged to bring their own seeds if desired.

Both programs meet at the Macon County Extension Office located at 3351 N. President Howard Brown Blvd. in Decatur from 6-7:30pm. Advance registration is required at least two days before each class date by visiting go.illinois.edu/dmp or calling 217.935.5764 for more information.

Upcoming topics in the Hands-on Horticulture with Hart series are Collecting Rainwater with Your Own DIY Rain Barrel in April and Colorful Container Gardening in May.
