Soil Fertility Webinar Brings Cutting-Edge Research to Farmers

DECATUR – New soil science research continues to show the importance of ensuring healthy soil, which leads to increased nutrient cycling, improved water infiltration and improved soil structure. This February, farmers and landowners are invited to learn about practices to encourage or sustain soil health at the annual Soil Fertility Webinar hosted by University of Illinois Extension in Macon County.

“Those in attendance will hear about the latest University of Illinois research on the long-term effects of crop rotation and tillage, as well as the relationship between cover crops and soil nitrogen availability,” said Extension Commercial Agriculture Educator Jesse Soule.

Other expert presenters from the University of Wisconsin, Western Illinois University and the Illinois Soil and Water Conservation Districts will discuss nutrient loss on tile-drained land, nutrient management in organic systems and S.T.A.R., a farmer-led program to improve soil health.

The Soil Fertility Webinar will be 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, February 28 at the Macon County Extension Office, 3351 N. President Howard Brown Blvd. in Decatur. Attendees are eligible to earn four and half hours of Certified Crop Advisor CEU credit.
The cost is $15 or $45 for those seeking CEU credits. Lunch is included. Sign up in advance by February 26 at or by calling the Macon County Extension Office at 217.877.6042.
