earth core

If you sliced the earth in half, you'd see its inner workings. The outer layer is the earth's crust . It is thin. It's thickest over land areas (up to 43 miles) and thinnest under the oceans (about 5 miles). The crust floats on top of the upper part of the mantle called the asthenosphere .
