When two plates collide, two things can happen. If one plate is ocean crust and one plate is land (continental) crust, the ocean crust slides underneath the land crust. As the ocean crust sinks into the earth, part of it melts. The bubbles of molten rock come up through the land crust, creating a line of volcanoes .
