The energy from an earthquake comes out in two ways. The first squeezes and stretches the rock resulting in a back and forth motion. The second produces a side to side shaking motion. All of this motion can create massive damage. Since the energy goes in all directions and through the earth's interior, earthquakes can be detected halfway around the world.
