Rock and soil washed away from land areas by rivers. These were deposited into the ocean as sediments. These would later become sedimentary rocks, such as sandstone (from sandy beaches, offshore bars, and islands), or shale (from mud in deep water, bays, and tidal flats), and limestone (shells from small creatures in shallow waters).
