These trees grew in a landscape of mud, with primitive amphibians and the first reptiles. There were also HUGE insects present, such as roaches over 6 inches long and dragonflies as big as a hawk!! It would take a long time, but the delta and coal forests covered the old ocean bedrock, and became sedimentary rock themselves.
