Slowly the bedrock bent into a bowl shape. The rim of the bowl is located in northern Illinois and is sandstone and limestone. The bottom of the bowl filled up with sediment and contains younger rocks that are made of shale and coal. This sits on top of older rocks in the central and southern parts of the state.
