Constructing Illinois

Once the meltwater was gone, the land started drying out. Lots of sediment from the meltwaters was around the river valleys. Very little vegetation was present. Strong winds picked up the sediment, and blew it over the glacial till. This fine, wind blown material is called LOESS. The farther away from the river valleys, the thinner the loess was deposited.
