Twitter #gardenchat breaks attendance record

University of Illinois Extension took Twitter by "storm" during hurricane #Sandy on October 29th. Stephanie Porter, Plant Diagnostic Outreach Specialist at the University of Illinois Plant Clinic, hosted the hour long #gardenchat session that focused on IPM. Joining her were Extension Educators Rhonda Ferree, Richard Hentschel, Kelly Allsup, Candice Miller, and Andrew Holsinger.

Twitter is an online social networking site where users (Tweeps) send and read short messages of up to 140 characters (tweets). Tweeters use hashtags (#) to identify specific topics. The University of Illinois led #gardenchat set a new record with an audience of 60,000+!

Stephanie started the #gardenchat with a general discussion about integrated pest management (IPM). Rhonda Ferree, Horticulture Educator with University of Illinois Extension, tweeted many times about how to deal with pesky weeds. Rhonda and other Tweeps discussed indicator weeds, chemical free weed control, and some specific difficult to control weeds. You can see the entire #gardenchat transcript at

Rhonda uses her own unique publication name and avatar on all of her social media sites. ILRiverHort signifies Rhonda's horticulture education efforts in nine counties along the lower Illinois River valley, including Fulton-Mason-Peoria-Tazewell (Unit #11) and Calhoun-Cass-Greene-Morgan-Scott (Unit #15). Her avatar logo is a close-up of a poppy behind the University of Illinois "I" mark. Rhonda says that, "Every time you see this avatar and publication name, you'll know it is from YOUR extension horticulture educator."
