ILRiverHort News and More

Originally published in Canton Daily Ledger column on Saturday, March 9, 2013.

Writing this column is one of my favorite weekly tasks. I enjoy sharing my horticultural world and thoughts with all my readers. Over my 20+ year career, I've found that I really like to write. I try to do that in many different formats that will hopefully reach many different people.

In an effort to brand myself and my work you'll find my unique publication name and avatar on many of my publications. ILRiverHort signifies that I provide horticulture education to four counties along the Illinois River valley: Fulton-Mason-Peoria-Tazewell (Unit #11). My avatar logo is a close-up of a poppy behind the University of Illinois "I" mark. Every time you see this avatar and publication name, you'll know it is from YOUR extension horticulture educator.

I use various social media tools in my educational outreach program. My Illinois River Valley Extension Horticulture Program Facebook page provides up-to-date gardening information through current posts, links, photos, event listings, and more. The Page averages 5,000 hits per month and is found at

Facebook is my favorite medium, but I also tweet daily at My Pinterest work includes bulletin boards on big trees, favorite gardens, and other resources at

I have several blogs available on our Unit Extension website at These include my ILRiverHort blog, a Community Garden Programming blog, A Japanese Beetle News blog, and more. You'll also find all articles I write for this column in the Extension Connection news link.

I am excited to announce my new publication - ILRiverHort News. This quarterly newsletter provides up to date gardening information for homeowners. The inaugural issue will go out in mid-March. It includes information on our horticulture program and a calendar of upcoming events.

The first issue asks readers to select the format they prefer to receive in the future. Options include a mailed hard copy (for a small fee), emailed copy, or the online version. The online version includes bonus articles from Extension horticulture educators across Illinois. These issues include Spinach by Jennifer Fishburn, Garden to Lose Weight by Martha Smith, Training your Apple Tree by Richard Hentchel, Plant to Attract Beneficial Insects This Spring by Candice Miller, and Drought Tolerant Plants by Rhonda Ferree.
