Ferree's ILRiverHort Sites Growing Quickly

Are you a friend of ILRiverHort? Rhonda Ferree, Horticulture Educator with University of Illinois Extension, uses social media sites to provide cutting edge, science-based garden writing to educate and interact with local citizens in a whole new way.

Rhonda's Illinois River Valley Extension Horticulture Program Facebook Page began in March 2011. The Page provides up-to-date gardening information through current posts, links, photos, videos, event listings, and more for followers to enjoy, engage, and share with others. Rhonda feels that her Facebook Page reaches new clientele and provides horticultural education in a quicker format. The Page currently has 328 direct followers and averages 9,000 hits a month. ILRiverHort Twitter posts typically mirror those on Facebook, thus extending the messages to another social media user group. Twitter uses very short messages and moves very quickly. In December 2012 Rhonda joined colleagues on an hour long #gardenchat session that focused on Integrated Pest Management. Pinterest is one of the fasting growing social media networks. ILRiverHort Pinterest has boards on Japanese beetles, shade plants, garden quotes, favorite gardens, big trees, and much more. Join Rhonda's 155 followers on Pinterest at

Rhonda also blogs regularly on several different sites. She blogs on ILRiverHort about her personal gardens, current pests and problems, and other gardening news. Japanese Beetle News was created in 2012 in response to the high numbers of beetles in west central Illinois that summer. Community Gardening Resources provides tips and materials for those starting or maintaining gardens in their neighborhoods. Rhonda provides leadership and expertise in horticulture programs for both the home gardener and commercial horticulturalist with emphasis in the area of landscape horticulture. Additionally, she oversees the local Master Gardener and Master Naturalist programs and trains the volunteers.

Rhonda brands her work with a unique publication name and avatar. ILRiverHort signifies that she provides horticulture education to four counties along the lower Illinois River valley: Fulton, Mason, Peoria, and Tazewell. Her avatar logo is a close-up of a poppy behind the University of Illinois "I" mark.
