  1. 4 inch soil temp: 73.3 degrees F
  2. Growing Degree Days (GDD) Since April 1,2014 = 1009.5 GDD Average** = 830.5 GDD
  3. Sweet corn growers with sweet corn soon approaching silking should have their corn earworm traps in place or be monitoring. See the Midwest Vegetable Production Guide for choices of insecticide for control.
  4. Even small incremental changes in pH mean a lot for soil and water chemistry. This is because the scale is logarithmic. The difference between a pH of 6 and 7 is ten-fold. Going from a pH of 6 to 8 is 10 x 10 or 100 fold. Bottom line: watch your soil pH closely as well as the water used for irrigation and fertigation.
  5. Cabbage worms/Cabbage loopers; Both of these caterpillars are present on plants right now and control measures are identical. The bacterial insecticide, Bacillus thuringensis, sold under the trade name Dipel, Thuricide, or Biotrol gives good control.
