  1. 4inch soil temp 69.3 degrees F
  2. Growing Degree Days (GDD) Since April 1, 2014 = 1641.5 GDD Average = 1535.0 GDD
  3. Late season weed control in storage onions. Several onion herbicides have 45-day preharvest intervals (PHI). A select few have 60 day PHI. Read the label carefully regarding the safe use of the weed control products.
  4. Due to high temperature conditions during harvest, speed is very important in handling the potato crop from digging to market. Tubers bruise easily during harvest at temperature above 85°F and below 50° F. Soil condition, tuber condition, and harvester operation are important factors that influence bruising. Summer harvested potatoes are not stored or held any longer than necessary before marketing. The best temperature for holding potatoes is 40 to 42° F.
  5. Fall/Winter crops. We are in or will shortly be in the planting window for fall and winter crops. Click here to view the Michigan State University Fall Seeding Chart for high tunnels. I find it a useful guide. Remember, East Lansing is a different growing zone so adjust accordingly.

Don't forget the August 4th Vegetable Crop Field Day in Monmouth. Hope to see you all there.
