Henry/Stark County Master Gardeners

Who Are Master Gardeners?

Master Gardeners are volunteers who have received over 60 hours of training from Extension Educators and State Specialists from the University of Illinois. Training covers the following home horticulture topics:

  • Landscaping
  • Botany
  • Integrated Pest Management
  • Soils and Fertilizers
  • Herbs
  • Wildlife
  • Woody Ornamentals
  • Plant Pathology
  • Entomology
  • Turfgrass
  • Vegetables
  • Houseplants

What Do Master Gardeners Do?

Henry-Stark County Master Gardeners have the opportunity to expand their knowledge base by participating in educational programs designed specifically for Master Gardeners in training or active Master Gardeners provided by the University of Illinois specialists and educators. In exchange for the training, Master Gardeners in Henry & Stark counties volunteer their time to help homeowners and gardeners as well as their community.

How Can a Master Gardener Help Henry/Stark County Residents?

  • If you have questions about raising fruits or vegetables.
  • If you need information about lawn care.
  • If the insects have invaded your flower garden.
  • If you are program chairman for a civic organization and need a speaker.
  • If you area a teacher who needs a helping hand in the class room concerning a horticulture related topic.
  • If you are a community organization who needs ideas or assistance in planning a community plant-based improvement project.
  • If you have a suggestion for an upcoming program topic.

How Can Henry & Stark Master Gardeners Be Contacted?

Master Gardeners may be contacted throughout the spring and summer by first contacting the Henry-Stark Extension office at 853-1533 between 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.weekdays.The Extension office will then contact a Master Gardener in your area, the Master Gardener will call you back. In some situations, we will provide a Master Gardener's phone number to you, and you can contact them directly. In addition, some call may require that you bring a sample into the Extension office to be viewed by a Master Gardener and compared to various reference books. Your sample may also be shared with Extension educator via digital photos over the Internet for positive ID.

If interested, contact the Henry Stark Unit/County Extension office at 853-1533 or check the state Master Gardener web site for more specific information, the application process, requirements and future training dates.
