Rock Island County Master Gardener Phil Cray was recognized as a 2017 Outstanding State Master Gardener during the State Master Gardener Conference

Rock Island County Master Gardener Phil Cray was the recipient of the 2017 Sustained Excellence Award at the State Master Gardener Conference September 8 in Normal, IL. The Outstanding State Award was established to honor the best of Illinois Master Gardeners. Only the top 2% of Illinois State Master Gardeners win this award annually. They must exceed in leadership, determination, positivity, initiative and be highly involved in the program. The Sustained Excellence Award was established to honor Illinois Master Gardeners who have previously received the Outstanding Award and have continued to demonstrate distinction in the program. Phil received Outstanding MG award in 2012 and has continued to be a diverse volunteer, lending his expertise to a variety of projects. A man with a big heart and a truck, Phil annually helps to get many projects off the ground and in the ground - whether in the garden or in a committee meeting Phil does what is needed. He is Co-Chair of University of Illinois Extension’s visual display at QCCA Flower & Garden Show, a 3-day event visited by approximately 12,000 people. He is on the Rock Island County Extension Grounds Core Team., is the Master Gardener Plant Sale/Dig Coordinator —maintaining a list for potential sites including community gardens in need of plant rejuvenation. He worked with Martha Smith, UI Extension Horticulture Educator, on a project to identify trees in the historic Chippiannock Cemetery.  He is also a Board Member of Unit 7 Advisory Council and volunteers on numerous Rock Island County Master Gardener projects including Nursery School; Rock Island County Fairgrounds gardens; In Touch/Evergreen Club projects; the Pollinator Patch; Riverside Garden; Arrowhead Ranch; Dig It newsletter; serves as a Rock Island County Master Gardener mentor; and assisted with the Mercer County Perennial Pollinator garden.

University of Illinois Extension will be holding a new 11-week Master Gardener Training starting January 19th at the Rock Island County Extension office in Milan, IL.
