Drooping clusters of small, white, fragrant, bell-like flowers in spring; shiny, evergreen leaves with new leaves emerging reddish or bronze then turning dark green; in winter, dormant flower buds have a reddish color. 
 
Culture
Partial shade; moist, well-drained soils best; prefers slightly acid soil.

Numerous cultivars including:

  • 'Compacta' - 6 feet tall, flowers profusely
  • 'Mountain Fire' - New leaves emerge red.
  • 'Scarlett O'Hara' - Narrow form with new leaves emerging red.
