Used primarily for its evergreen foliage. 
 
Culture
Full sun to full shade. It will do best in an area where it can be protected from winter sun and wind which can damage the evergreen leaves. Prefers a moist, well drained soil. 
 
Cultivars

Numerous cultivars are available, but most are not hardy north of zone 7. Some that can by used in nothern gardens include:

  • 'Baltica'-has smaller leaves, hardy to zone 5.
  • 'Bulgaria'-leaves turn purplish in winter; hardy to zone 5.
  • 'Rumania'-hardy to zone 5.
  • 'Thorndale'-larger leaves; hardy to zone 5.
