Full sun to full shade. It will do best in an area where it can be protected from winter sun and wind which can damage the evergreen leaves. Prefers a moist, well drained soil.
Numerous cultivars are available, but most are not hardy north of zone 7. Some that can by used in nothern gardens include:
- 'Baltica'-has smaller leaves, hardy to zone 5.
- 'Bulgaria'-leaves turn purplish in winter; hardy to zone 5.
- 'Rumania'-hardy to zone 5.
- 'Thorndale'-larger leaves; hardy to zone 5.
