Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCPs): Extending Knowledge and Mitigation Strategies
Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products
Project Leads and Affiliated Associations
Improper use, storage, or disposal of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) can have serious consequences for people, pets, wildlife, and drinking water. This project seeks to identify PPCPs in sewage treatment plants and concentrated animal feeding operation wastewater, investigate their fate and transport, assess potential effects of environmental occurrence of PPCPs on public health, and develop effective mitigation strategies. An important goal is to advance educational and outreach strategies including the establishment of medicine take-back programs.
Project staff have engaged with Extension units across the state developing take-back programs; exhibiting at County Fairs and other events; and promoting the project through media outlets.
