Meals for a Healthy Heart Workshop

Did you know heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women? It's true. In fact, one out of every four deaths is due to heart disease. Although the number of deaths due to heart disease has declined over the past fifty years due to improvements in emergency care, 735,000 Americans will still have a heart attack this year.

Lifestyle factors, health conditions and family history can put people at a higher risk of developing heart disease. You can decrease your risk by educating yourself and making healthy lifestyle choices, states Diane Reinhold, registered dietitian with University of Illinois Extension.

Planning, shopping and cooking for someone with heart disease can be a challenge. To help meet this challenge, University of Illinois Extension will offer a two-part workshop, Meals for a Healthy Heart, designed for anyone interested in preventing or managing heart disease. During each session, participants will receive recipes, watch cooking demonstrations, as well as learn about proper diet and exercise to better care for their health.  The workshops will be held on Thursdays, January 18 and 24, from 1:00-3:30 p.m. at the Winnebago County Extension Office, located at 1040 N. Second St. in Rockford.

Meals for a Healthy Heart aims to improve your overall wellbeing. These workshops are intended to complement the recommendations of your healthcare provider and to help you and/or your loved one manage or prevent heart disease.

Register early as space is limited and the cost is $20 which covers participation in both sessions, handouts and educational materials.  For more information or to register, visit or call 815-986-4357.

If you need a reasonable accommodation to participate in this program, please contact the Winnebago County Extension office at 815-986-4357.
