What is University of Illinois Extension?

It is a part of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. There are 76 Extension offices throughout Illinois providing services in four areas:
  • 4-H and Youth Development
There are more than 200,000 Illinois youngsters participating in programs that help them succeed in school, develop life skills in leadership, public speaking, job interviews, and many other project areas. In these programs, children will learn skills they will use the rest of their lives.

  • Family and Consumer Sciences
Hispanic families can learn about food safety, child care, budgeting, improving communication with children, and preventing health problems such as osteoporosis and heart disease. There are programs that teach families how to prepare nutritious food on a very limited income.

  • Community and Economic Development
Through Extension programs, Hispanic small business owners, volunteer groups, community leaders and government officials can help to strengthen their communities. Programs focus on leadership, employment skills, home improvement, health, tourism and education. The more Hispanics participate in community activities, the more opportunities and benefits their families will have.

  • Agriculture and Natural Resources
Agriculture programs focus on landscape management, water quality, farm safety and safe pesticide use, and increased productivity in cash crops.
