Custom Applicator Training
The Great Lakes For-Hire Commercial Manure Applicator Voluntary Certification and Training Program has been in place across several states since 2002. Commercial manure haulers and applicators in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Illinois participate in regularly-offered extensive training in all aspects of manure application. Those haulers who complete the certification program could be eligible for reductions in liability insurance premiums, depending on the insurance carrier.
Organizers of the multi-state program believe they will save everyone money by sharing resources and avoiding duplication of efforts. Also, because haulers often work across state lines, organizers have created a certification process that has some recognition from state to state.
Illinois does not regulate commercial manure haulers as a recognized group at this time. However, there are benefits for commercial haulers to participate in training, especially for helping new employees understand the safety and environmental aspects of for-hire manure hauling and land application.
The University of Illinois Extension also maintains an online list of custom manure applicators intended to help private farmers find applicators in their area. If you are interested in being added to the list please email Professor Rich Gates, firstname.lastname@example.org.
