James Reaves has worked as County Director for University of Illinois Extension since January 2009. He has 31 years of Extension experience working with University of Tennessee, Tennessee State University, University of Georgia and now University of Illinois. He received a bachelor of science degree from Tennessee State University and a master of science degree from University of Tennessee.
During his career he has served in many Extension roles, both as an educator and county director which includes: 4-H Educator, Small Farm Educator, Urban Gardening Educator, Community Resource Development Educator, Urban Program Educator and as a County Director with University of Georgia Extension, Fulton County.
As the current County Director of Lake and McHenry counties, his responsibilities include providing leadership to the unit staff and communicating local needs and responsibilities aligning with University of Illinois Extension mission. He provides for fiscal entrepreneurship and management, personnel management, program development, as well as delivery and leadership to local Extension foundation and council boards. He facilitates and establishes relationships with diverse audiences while collaborating and partnering with people to improve lives of individuals and the communities in which they live. He values open communication on all levels of the job and believes in teamwork and recognition.
He has been selected to participate in Washington, DC USDA CSREES Fellows Program, University of Tennessee Leadership Academy and in the National Extension Leadership Development class of (2003-2005). His awards include Tennessee State University "James E. Ferrell Program Award"; City of Memphis "City Beautiful Commission Award"; City of Memphis "Mayors First Annual Community Development Award"; Shelby County Government "Outstanding Volunteer Service Award"; and Alabama Cooperative Extension "Urban Program Award."
His professional affiliations include: Tennessee State University Chicago Alumni Chapter, Lake County NAACP Chapter and Lake/ McHenry Farm Bureau and Illinois Agriculture Association.
