National Small Farms Conference from Mike Roegge

Posted by John Fulton -

If you've an interest in learning about a number of potential income producing activities for small acreages, then one of the best venues would be the National Small Farm Conference, which will be held Nov. 4-6 in Columbia, MO.

The three days are filled with opportunities to learn from those who are practicing what they are speaking on. All the speakers are growers that have experience growing or doing what they will be discussing. Many of the speakers are SARE grant recipients and are speaking on their project. And the topics are diverse. They range from ethnic vegetables and tomato grafting to goats and heritage breeds of turkeys. There is literally something for everyone.

Throughout the three days, there are in depth short courses, seminars and forums running simultaneously. You determine which you'll attend. There are hour long seminars and shorter discussion forums. For an additional fee you can partake in one of several short courses, a half day in-depth learning opportunity. Speakers for the short courses are nationally recognized (Joel Salatin, Greg Judy and Norman Kilmer).

The program is held at the Boone County Fairgrounds outside of Columbia. It lasts all day for the three days. However, you can elect to attend one, two or all three days. And the cost is very reasonable- one day is $10, two days $15 and three days $20. The short course fee starts at $35 and is reduced if you elect to enroll in several.
