Speaker for the evening will be 4-H member, Katlyn Helton, who traveled to India this past summer. Leaders will receive info closer to the date. Be thinking about the country you'd like to study & start planning now! Mark it on your calendar so that you can attend & learn about different cultures!
4-H Hay Bale Decorating Contest Results!
During this year's Logan County Fair Week, Hay Bale structures were created as part of a contest. 4-H Ambassadors, Atlanta Town & Country 4-H Club, Four Corner Clovers 4-H Club, and Hollanders 4-H Club participated. A QR Code sign was placed next to each for voting purposes. The winning design which received the most votes was Four Corner Clovers 4-H Club! CONGRATS!! They will receive a prize at their first club meeting of the new 4-H year. A good time was had by all as they created their designs!!
Award Winners/Thank Yous
Any 4-H member who won any type of award should write a thank you note to their trophy or award sponsor. If you have not done so, please do this ASAP! A pre-addressed thank you note was attached to 4-H awards this year. Please fill out and send if you have not already done so! The businesses and individuals who sponsor awards are more likely to continue if you take the time to write a Thank You note. Even if you thanked them in person, a written note in addition is recommended.
Also, if you sold an animal in the 4-H sale, a "Thank You" to your buyer(s) should be sent as well if you have not already done so! A handwritten Thank You note means a lot to buyers and award sponsors, so please be sure to send one!!

Educator Corner - Carissa Akpore -
Being new to a group is something we have all experienced in the past or will likely experience in the future. Many times those new to a group have feelings of nervousness, worry or confusion. When first joining 4-H, members and their families may experience some of these feelings as they dive into learning new skills, experiencing new things and learning all the 4-H lingo. One of the benefits of being a 4-H member is having a sense of belonging to a 4-H club. As leaders, there is role you can play bridging the feeling of newness families feel when they first join 4-H and/or your club to them feeling a sense of belonging to the club.
Doing get-acquainted or ice breaker activities is one of the ways to welcome new families into your club and to encourage current members to get to know the other members better. Consider adding an activity of this nature to your club meeting agenda for each club meeting. Focus on activities that really encourage each member to talk and highlight what they like/don't like, experiences they have had and generally get the youth up and moving.
It is equally as important for new families to talk with Extension staff as it is with leaders as they begin their 4-H experience. Leaders should consider the following when meeting or talking with new families.
ü Club meeting dates/times.
ü Expectations for families involved in 4-H and in their club.
ü How information is shared through the Extension office and the club. i.e. newsletters, email, text, others.
ü Plan a get-acquainted or ice breaker activity for each meeting.
ü Encourage family involvement in the club.
ü Consider assigning a new family to an experienced family in your club to further encourage a welcoming environment.
ü Encourage the new family to read their 4-H newsletter and ask questions if they have them.
Leaders should be cautioned not to overload families with more information than they can digest for one meeting. Consider giving them the information that is needed for the time of year you are meeting with them.
Inevitably, leaders play an important role in creating a welcoming environment for members, both new and experienced. Purposefully creating a welcoming environment will increase members' and families' sense of belonging.

Speaking for IL 4-H Training

Whether it be talking to donors, civic groups, county board members or state legislators, we need YOUR help! Join the Speaking for Illinois 4-H team and share your story. The next training is Saturday, Sept. 30 in Belvidere at the Boone County Extension Office.
Taught by members of the Illinois 4-H Youth Leadership Team, Speaking for Illinois 4-H is open to 4-H members age 14 and older. Speaking for Illinois 4-H (SFI4-H) offers teens advanced training in preparing your 4-H story to "tell the world" how great the 4-H program is!
By taking the training, you'll be able to assist your local 4-H program with speaking engagements and one-on-one conversations. Once trained, 4-H'ers are expected to work with their local Extension staff to promote 4-H on the local level. On the state level, trained members receive invitations to participate in the 4-H Legislative Connection events at the state Capitol each spring.
Cost is $12 for the 10 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. training; lunch is included. Space is limited, so don't wait until the last minute to register!
