European Elm Scale

Description:
European Elm scale is soft scale that feeds on sap and produce sticky honeydew. Heavy infestations cause chlorosis, leaf drop and stem dieback. Sooty mold grows on the honeydew secretions.

Life cycle:

They lay their eggs in late June and July. When the eggs hatch crawlers move to the leaves. In Fall, the return to crevices in the bark to overwinter. The overwintering scale mature in late May, mate and begin to lay eggs.

How to control:

Spray Horticulture Oil or Insecticidal soap in late June (2012- as of now we are 3 weeks early) to kill crawlers. Allow natural enemies like parasitic wasps and predatory plant bugs to control.
