Harvest observations from a trip to campus

Today I traveled to the University of Illinois campus to meet with peers for our Extension marketing team. One of the jobs tasked to this committee is development or collection of content to be used to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of Extension. On the return trip from Champaign to Morris a number of combines were harvesting both corn and soybean. On September 27th Dr. Emerson Nafziger posted  his "Thoughts at Harvest" in the Illinois Bulletin.

Emerson shared that Corn and soybean harvest in Illinois stood at 5 and 1 percent, respectively, on September 22, 2013. These are behind the 5-year averages, and far behind the 51 percent of the corn crop harvested by this date in 2012.

Corn yields from the early harvested corn have ranged from good to excellent, despite some areas that experienced very limited rainfall in the latter portion of the growing season. Very few complaints have been shared on stalk quality of the corn crop. To date little has been reported in the way of Aflatoxins.

Reports so far on the soybean crop have also been fair to good, there is some thought that the early-maturing soybeans (planted early or early maturity varieties) might have escaped some of the drought stress, and that later-maturing fields might not yield as well. A key indicator will be seed size; with pod numbers mostly better than last year and without the rain to prolong seedfilling this year, we expect to see smaller seeds in fields where stress ended the filling period. Those who I have visited with have shared how surprisingly dry their harvested soybean have been.

Most of us will have a slight lag in northern Illinois as our crops mature, but many, including the NIARC expect to be harvesting fields soon.
