IEAA fall meeting, southern Illinois

Posted by Russel Higgins -

The Illinois Extension Agricultural Association 2013 fall meeting was hosted by our southern district. Near the town of Keenes we toured Frey Farms, best known as the nation's top producer of Jack O Lantern pumpkins. Justin Talley shared the history and breadth of the Frey Farm operation, now planting product from Florida to Michigan. The challenges of production, packaging, transportation and marketing of fresh produce was shared with our group.

We also visited the University of Illinois Ewing demonstration plots, with a plot site boasting 45 years of continuous no-till. That evening our guest speaker was Sarah Allen from Monsanto who shared her experience with Palmer amaranth in the Collinsville area and future management programs, including dicamba resistant soybean. Sarah stressed that successful Palmer amaranth control will demand an integrated approach.

Congratulations to those recognized by the Illinois Extension Agricultural Association

Hall of Fame - Dr. Darrel Good and Bill Shoemaker
