Private Well Water Classes

Watching the radar Monday night and listening to the National Weather Service severe thunderstorm warnings and tornado watches being issued – more than 2 inches of rain was forecasted to fall in less than 1 hour in the Illinois River valley! – got me thinking again about the safety of private well water.

Steve Wilson, a groundwater hydrologist for the Illinois State Water Survey, developed a series of short online and email-based lessons on private water well-related topics. He developed the class through funds obtained from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Homeowners can become 'experts' on matters pertaining to their private water well through a series of classes that are delivered at no charge through a weekly email. These email lessons cover a variety of topics including:

  • "understanding how groundwater moves and gets into your well
  • how water gets from your well to your faucet
  • basics of well construction and the type of well you have
  • how groundwater and wells get contaminated
  • common operations issues for well owners
  • how to care for and maintain your well, pump, and infrastructure
  • testing your well water and ensuring water is safe to drink
  • understanding test results and fixing water quality problems
  • understanding regulations that affect you
  • what to do in an emergency or equipment failure
  • where to find help and get questions answered locally"

Before, during, and after these email lessons, well owners can also access three archived webinars which help to reinforce the email-based lessons through photos and sound: "How your private well works", "Proper care of your private well" and Water quality and your private well".

More information about the email-based series of lessons or the webinars can be found at the Private Well Class website or by contacting Steve Wilson at the Illinois State Water Survey.
