Richard Hentschel, host of Green Side Up at WDCB interviews Laura Barr, Nutrition and Wellness Educator with the University of Illinois. Richard and Laura discuss the role of fruits and vegetables in USDA's "MY PLATE" nutrition program. On a typical 9 inch dinner plate, half of the portions should be fruits and vegetables. The other portions should focus on whole grains, calcium rich foods and a portion of protein. The My Plate is a lot easier to visualize that the former food pyramid model since we fill a plate 2 -3 times a day. Getting those fruits and vegetables should be really easy during the summer months with all the locally grown fruits and vegetables available from area growers and the neighborhood farmer markets.
Green Side Up is a gardening program produced by University of Illinois Extension. It is hosted by Richard Hentschel, Extension Educator, Horticulture.
