When Thomas Jefferson became President in 1801, two out of every three Americans lived within 50 miles of the Atlantic Ocean and only four roads crossed the Alleghany Mountains. The United States ended on the eastern banks of the Mississippi River. Jefferson believed that the nation that discovered the Northwest Passage and then controlled it would control the destiny of the continent.
