Below are five statements that describe the criteria for addiction.  Read each statement and consider which statements might describe your relationship with nicotine.

  • A person needs to have the drug or they begin to feel uncomfortable. Smoking  relieves the uncomfortable feelings. 
  • A person has tried to stop using but can’t.
  • A person feels moody or sick when they don’t have the drug in their body.
  • The person keeps smoking even though they are having physical problems because of their smoking behavior.

Directions: Please answer these questions about your smoking behavior.

1. Do you smoke your first cigarette within 30 minutes of waking up in the morning? Yes No
2. Do you smoke 20 cigarettes (one pack) or more each day? Yes No
3. At times when you can’t smoke or haven’t got any cigarettes, do you feel a craving for one? Yes No
4. Is it tough for you to keep from smoking for more than a few hours? Yes No
5. When you are sick enough to stay in bed, do you still smoke? Yes No
