Food Safety & Storage Training for Food Pantries

The USDA estimates that 30% to 40% of the U.S. food supply is wasted. This July, the University of Illinois Extension Snap-Ed program is partnering with the Decatur Salvation Army for a Food Safety & Storage Training program aimed at reducing food waste in area food banks and pantries.
This free training is part of an overall effort to reduce pantry food waste by improving food storage methods, lengthening shelf life and increasing client choice options.
Food Safety & Storage Training for Food Pantries is open to any Central Illinois food pantry staff. The training will be from 10 a.m. to noon July 31 in the Community Room of the Salvation Army, 229 W. Main St., Decatur. Those interested should sign up by July 26 with the Macon County Extension Office at go.illinois.edu/dmp or by calling 217.877.6042. This program is being hosted by Illinois Nutrition Education Programs and SNAP-Ed, which are part of University of Illinois Extension and provide nutrition education to individuals and families. In 2017, Macon County’s SNAP-Ed program served 5,598 program participants.
