2013 Chicago Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony

The City of Chicago and UL are proud to present the 100th Anniversary of the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on Daley Plaza, Tuesday, November 26 beginning at 5 pm with a music program and the tree will be lit at 6 pm. This is a special year as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the City of Chicago's first municipal Christmas tree that was lit on December 24, 1913 in Grant Park.


A German Holiday Market for family and friends returns to celebrate its 14th Anniversary on Daley Plaza.

2013 Capitol Christmas Tree Lighting

The U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree will will be lit by Speaker of the House John A. Boehner during a ceremony on Tuesday, December 3, on the Capitol's West Front lawn beginning at 5 p.m. Architect of the Capitol Stephen T. Ayers, FAIA, LEED AP, will serve as master of ceremonies.

National Christmas Tree History and Timeline

In 1923, President Calvin Coolidge walked from the White House to the Ellipse to light a 48-foot fir tree decorated with 2,500 electric bulbs in red, white and green, as a local choir and a "quartet" from the U.S. Marine Band performed. 90 years later, this American holiday tradition continues to bring citizens together to share in a message of hope and peace.

The 2013 Rockefeller Christmas Tree Lighting: Livening Up NYC for the Holidays

The first Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree was set up in 1931 by construction workers building Rockefeller Center in celebration of the new site.
