Growing Stapel Crops for Local Markets

Recently, the local foods movement, and the niche marketing opportunities it affords, have led to producers' renewed interest in growing grains and other staple crops for the local market. Small grains include wheat, buckwheat, oats, rye, sorghum and barley.

So, while many field crops and specialty crops have been getting all the attention, small grains and other staples have been shelved, but are making a comeback. Hear more from Bill Davison and James Theuri (University of Illinois Extension local food systems/small farm educators) –they will discuss small grains and staples that can grow in backyards or on a larger scale, addressing agronomy, challenges, marketing, and resources available for information. On-going work with beans, oilseeds, hazelnuts, Chinese chestnuts, open-pollinated corn and upland rice will be presented.

Cost for participation is $10 per person by December 15 to reserve your spot.
