Squeal School - What Pigs and Cows Can Bring to the Classroom

June 20, 2018 (9:00 AM - 3:00 PM )

University of Illinois Extension Marshall Putnam County Office
509 Front Street
Henry, IL 61537 (Marshall County)

Come along with us as we tour a brand new hog operation and visit a cattle feedlot to learn first hand how pigs and cows enrich our lives. This six hour workshop provides a background in two of

Illinois’ top commodities. You will take part in activities that teach core subjects in an out of the ordinary way.  Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards are referenced.

A guest veterinarian will share insights learned during a career caring for large animals. Nutritional benefits of protein dishes as well as food safety  are on the agenda as we observe a demonstration on healthy cooking as part of our working lunch.  The afternoon is spent touring a local farm. Transportation is provided. Please bring a clean pair of tennis shoes to wear in the hog confinement facility.  Lessons are geared for Kindergarten through fifth grades but all teachers are welcome. Workshop participants will be limited to twenty teachers. Registration closes June 13, 2018.

** Anyone who has been around other hogs less than 3 days before June 20th would not be able to take the tour due to the risk of cross contamination**
