Backyard Gardening: A Full Season Walkthrough!

April 23, 2019 (6:00 PM )

Unity Community Center
632 Orlando Avenue
Normal, IL 61761 (McLean County)

A step-by step series to teach residents to grow a diverse mix of vegetables, efficiently use garden space, and manage the produce you grow. The skills learned in this class can be useful for a beginner with a backyard garden, a small-plot community garden, or an organization’s larger donation garden. Beginning gardeners will learn how to get started. Seasoned gardeners will be able to hone their practices.

Extension educators will guide participants through a Garden Calendar to produce food efficiently throughout the growing season, using proven and reliable techniques. Classes will be every-other Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., starting on April 23 and ending on September 10.

Class topics include soil health, garden planning, vegetable varieties, crop rotation, seeding, weeding and tools, garden insects and diseases, trellising, irrigation, herbs, harvest, storage and preservation, composting, edible landscapes, seed saving, cover crops, and using the produce.

Registration includes the Vegetable Gardening Guide of the Midwest, eleven hands-on gardening classes and learning materials, and a share of produce harvested from the teaching garden in Normal. There is also a work option where the fee will be waived in exchange for working in the production garden with our garden leader for 10 extra hours throughout the season outside of class.
