Thursday, January 30, 2014, at 6:00 p.m. at the Rock Island Extension Office, Milan, IL 61264The meeting of the University of Illinois Extension Council Meeting – Henry, Mercer, Rock Island, and Stark Counties was called to order by Alice Webster on Thursday, January 30, 2014, at 6:00 p.m. at the Rock Island Extension office, Milan, IL.
Present: Allycia Andrews, Latricia Andrews, Jayne Booth, Barb Chiles, Al Curry, Stephanie Dorsey, Eva Dynes, Adela Martinez, Darcy McRoberts, Bob Mueller, Gary Smith, Danny Weatherspoon, and Alice Webster
Excused: Adrian Blackwell, Kelton Cheline, Brenda Flynn, Zenaida Landeros, Kyle Lloyd, and Jenna Preston
Others Present: Tony Franklin, Diane Baker, Jenny Garner, Cheryl Geitner, Kristin Bogdonas, and Gary Dynes.
Public comments: Eva introduced her father, Gary.
· Approval of October 15, 2013 meeting minutes was moved to be accepted as is by Bob Mueller and seconded by Alice Webster. Motion approved.
· Fiscal reports were reviewed. Tony Franklin reported the current cash balance for Unit 7 of $698,603.51 reflecting 64% of total budget. The substantial amount grant money coming into the unit is helping us be more sustainable and allowing us to operate under budget. Tony also reported on each of the unit offices' In/Out balances year-to-date. The Income and Expense analysis sheet was reviewed.
• Al talked about the progress of his Honey Bee SPIN Club.
• Barb said she is seeing good things about 4-H and FFA in the Mercer County newspaper. She also discussed the Mercer County Board is interested in Agri-tourism.
• Alice stated more is being done to improve leadership of 4-H.
Staff Reports: (see Staff Reports for complete highlights)
Diane Baker: Diane elaborated on the 4-H Science Siesta scheduled for February 7-8; Teens as Teachers and Teen Leadership Academy. Distributed flyers for Science Siesta.
Kristin Bogdonas: Kristin emphasized the Meals for Healthy Hearts and Worksite Wellness programs.
Jenny Garner: Passed out the upcoming social media webinar series in Henry-Stark counties, the North Central Region indicators that featured our unit, the redesigned Mercer County tourism brochure, and the Community Matters application.
Cheryl Geitner: Cheryl highlighted the Horse Bowl Hippology, which has been hosted in our unit four years in a row.
Martha Smith: In Martha's absence, Tony reported on her behalf. He talked about the Emerald Ash Borer site being on our unit website. There are links to forms and information plus the three voice-over PowerPoints uploaded as YouTube videos. Martha's intention is to offer quick, easy to reference information as we get into the 2014 growing season and homeowners have questions about EAB, Ash trees, and homeowner control options. Distributed the Bald Eagle Days flyer and EAB bookmark.
Other Reports and Announcements:
The Extension 100 Year Gala is scheduled for April 5 at Lavender Crest in Colona, IL. There will be a silent auction and dinner. Looking for old pictures representing Extension and 4-H programs over the years in each county. We do not have much historical information and pictures from Rock Island and Henry counties.
Tony mentioned there are several positions in the process of being filled, i.e., Extension Program Coordinator 4-H for Henry/Stark, Office Support Associate (fiscal), and two SNAP-Ed Community Workers .
Reviewed the In/Out and Federation Audits for FY13. After discussion, Barb Chiles moved to accept the audits as submitted and seconded by Jayne Booth. Motion passed unanimously.
Kristin led the group in an experience called Mindful Eating. Mindful Eating is a concept that encourages people to eat slowly, paying close attention to the sensation and purpose of each morsel using all our senses.
Danny shared his experience on the Extension State Advisory Council. He talked about Extension survival, networking, Facebook/Twitter, improving and enhancing efforts, and grassroots connections.
Next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at 6 p.m. at the Mercer County Extension office, 2106 SE 3rd Street, Aledo, IL 61231.
There being no further business to come before the meeting, a motion was made by Eva Dynes, with a second by Danny Weatherspoon that the meeting be adjourned. Motion passed. The meeting was adjourned at 7:25 p.m.
