March 20, 2014

The Fulton-Mason-Peoria-Tazewell Extension Council met Thursday, March 20, 2014 at the Fulton County Farm Bureau Building. Members present were Nick Hayward, Sharon Spangler, Nancy Glick, Kelvin Sampson, Amanda Woodruff, Cody Zeeck, John Asplund, James Harp, and Glenn Knott. Also present were – Unit Director, Earl Allen, Jason Haupt, Energy and Environmental Stewardship Educator and Christine Belles, coordinator for Master Naturalist program. Members absent were Shundell Broomfield, Mike Endress, Clara Gonzalez, Cindy Hoerbert, Barb Knake, Scott Lowery, Katelyn Pruitt, Anne Sherbeyn, and Debbie Yetter.

Nick Hayward, Extension Council Chairman, called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. The meeting began by welcoming Earl Allen back as Unit Director and introductions of those present.

Minutes of the last meeting were approved by Cody Zeeck and seconded by James Harp.

Earl introduced Jason Haupt, Energy and Environmental Stewardship Educator. Jason explained the Master Naturalist Program's mission and goals, history of MN program, locations where Master Naturalists can volunteer, and the opportunities for Master Naturalists. The first year, MN are required to do 30 hours of volunteer work and 10 hours of continuing education.

Jason introduced Christine Belles, Coordinator for MN program. She explained the MN programs in Unit 11. Twenty-two MN have been trained this year, but trainees will be limited to 20 next year. She stated the training is very "hands on".

Earl explained the FY14 Trust Fiscal Report and answered questions from council members.

Motion was made by Glenn Knott and seconded by John Asplund to approve the signatories for local account signature cards. Each check written requires two signatures.

· Fulton – Earl, Kathie Brown, Janis Blout, Patty Wiegers

· Mason – Earl, Rhonda Ferree, Julia Pryor, and Joli Pierson

· Peoria – Earl, Margaret Cover, Judy Schmidt, Cathy Ludolph

· Tazewell – Earl, Ginger Schnecker, Mekenzie Riley, Anita Wilkinson

Staffing Update:

· Rhonda Ferree, Horticulture Educator – 25% State Master Naturalist Coordinator.

· Mekenzie Riley, Nutrition Educator – moving 100% to Unit 10 July 1, 2014.

· New Staff – Angie Sassine, Office Support Associate in Peoria and Katie Connor, SNAP-Ed in Mason Co.

· Summer help- There will be 4-H summer help in the four offices. Logan Clark has been employed as an intern in Mason County.

· Marketing Program Coordinator – we currently do not have one. Nigel Austin, the past Interim County Director, recommended that we hire someone. They hope to have someone hired by September 1, 2014. The Extension Council Board all agreed that a marketing program coordinator would be very beneficial.

Other Business:

· Earl discussed educator openings and the impact of retirement law changes.

· Discussion was held about council meetings at dual locations but everyone agreed that face to face meetings were the best.

· Future Council meeting dates – the next council meeting will be held Tues. May 13, 2014, 6:30 p.m. at either Peoria or Havana. The County Extension Board meeting will be in July.

The meeting was adjourned by Chair Nick Hayward at 8:00 p.m.
